Sweet Treats for Safe Cyclists

If you put on your helmet before going out for a bike ride, don’t be surprised if you’re stopped by a cop.

The Naperville police, park district police, and Dunkin’ Donuts have partnered to promote safety.

They’re issuing citations for safe riding, except instead of a ticket; you’ll get a coupon for a free donut.

“We want everybody to wear a helmet, including adults. Studies have shown you can prevent a head injury by 85% if you have a bike accident just by wearing your helmet,” said Mary Browning, crime prevention specialist with the Naperville Police Department.

The program hopes to encourage other safe cycling practices too.

Young kids should stick to the sidewalk, and riders on the road need to obey all traffic signals, stop at all stop signs, and signal to let motorists know when they’re turning.

You can also register your bike with the police department so they can return it to you if it’s lost or stolen.
