Memorial Day Parade

Memorial Day was full of remembrance for fallen heroes. Naperville honored veterans with a number of services including a three-volley salute and prayers. At 10:30 a.m., crowds gathered Downtown Naperville to watch the Memorial Day Parade. The American Legion, Naperville City Council, Naperville schools, and other community groups all marched to remember and honor those who served our country. The day ended with a Special Remembrance Ceremony in Central Park.

Top City for Crafters

Naperville is the best suburb in America for crafters according to The website recently named our city as one of the “coolest” places to live in the country, but gave Naperville the crafting superlative thanks to public art like the Century Walk and the many art fairs in town. The website also claims Napervillians sell their crafts more than any other suburb in the U.S., with 13,400 postings on Etsy last year.

Art Exhibit Added to Last Fling

In other art news, an art exposition will be included in this year’s Last Fling. All art media are welcome to show off their work at the Labor Day weekend festival, though applications for participants are due by July 12. A panel of experts will judge the submissions and determine who will be selected for the spaces by July 18.

Naperville Runners Win Titles

Saturday was a day filled with championships for the Naperville sports scene. North Central College senior Dhruvil Patel won the 5,000 and 10,000 meter Division III national outdoor track championships, his fifth and sixth national titles overall. He ends his career as a 13-time All-American in track and cross country, setting a new school record.

At the IHSA boys state track meet at Eastern Illinois, Naperville Central senior Thomas Shilgalis won the 800 meter state championship with a time of 1:54.86. Shilgalis also ran the anchor leg of the state champion 4X800 relay team, which included runners Seth Klein-Collins, Patrick Julian and Thomas Codo.
