Portillo’s is a popular dining spot all over Chicagoland. A real hot dog from the company recently made his way to Naperville.

Founder Dick Portillo’s new book “Out of the Dog House” tells the story of the first Portillo’s restaurant in Villa Park, Illinois.

He recently stopped by Anderson’s Bookshop in Naperville as the first stop on his promotional tour.

But “Out of the Dog House” isn’t just for those who love their Chicago-style dogs. The book tells a story of perseverance and creativity.

“It is indeed the American dream when you think about it,” said Portillo. “From an $1100 investment to what it is today. I find it interesting because it’s my life story, my wife and I. Will the public find it interesting? That remains to be seen. It’s not going to be a Pulitzer Prize winning book. It’s just going to be a book about a guy that started from scratch and is living the American dream.”

Portillo’s fans came by to pick up signed copies and pepper the author with questions.

A Chicago Portillo’s branch was recently named Tripadvisor’s best fast casual restaurant in the country.
