March 20 was primary day and as votes were being tallied, DuPage County had a technical issue, which prevented the election commission from counting ballots.
Problems began when officials started closing the optical scan voting machines to get results at some precincts.
The paper stock used for the machines didn’t fit through the scanner, which resulted in precincts being unable to close the optical scan.
268 voting machines had to be brought to the election commission office in Wheaton to tabulate the results, leading to vote totals being delayed late into the evening.
And those delayed results kept many nominees up waiting.
“I put my girls to bed last night and they said, ‘did you win?’ And I said ‘I don’t know, but I want to sleep in tomorrow.’ And six in the morning they’re in the room going, ‘did you win?’ I said, ‘I did but I’ve only been asleep for two hours,’” explained Democratic nominee for the 6th Congressional District Sean Casten.
Election commission officials reported that no votes were compromised during the difficulties.
