The space behind the Naperville Municipal Center is about to get a little bit “smarter.”

Construction on the Naperville Jaycees Park is officially underway. Mayor Steve Chirico opened up the groundbreaking festivities stating the goals of the new “smart park.”

“We hope this outdoor workspace will bring community members together and will encourage millennials to continue to live and work in Naperville,” said Chirico.

The park was designed by Hitchcock Design Group and will serve as an outdoor workspace with public Wi-Fi, USB ports and charging stations, and flexible seating options for small and large groups.

Working outside holds a special place in the heart of the president of the Jaycees, Matt Dingeldein.

“You might remember those days in high school. Did anybody ever have that one teacher that let you have class outside?” asked Dingeldein. “I’ll never forget that and what a treat that was. I don’t know if we learned anything or did anything productive, but we were outside.”

After the speeches, it was finally time to turn some dirt.

The smart park will be powered by solar panels that will be installed on the roof of the municipal center and it is scheduled to be completed in the Spring of 2019.
