The Naperville Parks Foundation distributed wood milled from the Hobson Oak tree on Saturday morning. Both professional and amateur artists came out to see what was still available of the local landmark.
After the historic tree was cut down in 2016, the parks foundation invited local artisans to come take choice cuts of the lumber. But this time, anyone was welcome.
“This is our first time we’ve really opened it up to the public to announce that we’re handing out wood,” said Naperville Parks Foundation President Troy Cooper. “So we didn’t really know what to expect but we’re happy with how many came out so far.”
Cooper said he knows artists are making benches, bowls, guitars, and pretty much anything else that can be done with the lumber.
All the pieces created from the tree will be auctioned off in the fall with the proceeds benefitting charity.
“I’m a painter and I like to make jewelry,” said Carol Hendricks, a local artist. “I think it’s nice to have pieces in different price ranges for people. Because not everybody can afford a whole table, but they might be able to afford a little necklace or a mini painting.”
About half the wood from the tree has been given out and more wood will be available to the public in the future.
