Telecom companies are creeping closer and closer to 5G networks, the next generation of wireless technology. Several organizations came together to host a workshop to discuss what that means for industry.

5G-Alliance for Connected Industries and Automation (5G-ACIA), along with Nokia and Hub88, hosted the event, which served as a chance for industry professionals to learn more about how 5G will affect different industries.

“Everything will be affected by 5G from various industries like the power industry to the textile industry to farm industry,” said Amitava Ghosh, the head of Nokia’s Radio Interface Group.

The Internet of Things

That’s because when 5G is finally rolled out, it won’t just mean faster internet. Everything from self-driving cars to refrigerators to running shoes will be connected to the network. That will allow for a greater cooperation between humans and machines.

“So with this ultra-reliable communication, you can make sure that machines can collaborate with humans so that you can control the machines,” said 5G-ACIA’s Alexander Bentkus. “And the benefit for the worker is that the difficult parts can be supported by robots.”

Planning for the Future

While nationwide 5G is still years away, you can already find 5G networks in parts of several U.S. cities, including Chicago.
