2011 was a milestone year for the Kroehler Family YMCA, as it celebrated 100 years serving the community.

In 1909, when the city had a population short of 4,000, local businessman Peter Kroehler gathered fellow residents to raise more than $26,000 to have a YMCA built in town.

That facility opened two years later and over the years, was home to a bowling alley, men’s dormitory and now swimming pool, gym, and child care center.

The century celebration brought the community together for events geared towards families and children.

Also in 2011, the Kroehler YMCA merged with the YMCA of Metro Chicago to help ensure the Y’s success for the next 100 years.
