The familiar ring of the bell at Brookdale Elementary signaled the beginning of the 2026-2027 school year in Indian Prairie School District 204.

But it also marked the start of Superintendent John Price’s first year leading the district.

Price continues first-day tradition

“It’s a ritual to come to Brookdale and to ring the school bell,” Price said. “It means the beginning of school, and so to be a part of that tradition here with the principal and with the students here, it’s special for me in my first year.”

Brookdale Principal Keeley Schmid was happy to welcome Price aboard.

“It’s a symbol of a brand new chapter and a new journey,” said Brookdale Principal Keeley Schmid. “It really takes a village to make everything possible that we do in this amazing district, and to have him start his journey with us, it truly is an honor.”

A warm welcome for students and Price

After ringing the bell, Price joined Schmid on the blacktop behind the school to welcome students on their first day.

“The students are so excited to be here. They’re connecting with their teachers. I saw kids walking by and giving their teachers from last year hugs. Just really bringing the community together, and the teachers out here having a great time, just setting a really wonderful tone for the first day and for the whole school year,” Price said.

“I’m so lucky to be in Indian Prairie and to be a part of this family and part of this community. It’s a privilege to do this work with our children, and so I feel very, very fortunate,” Price continued.
