New Lab at North Central College
North Central College has a new lab for its undergraduate engineering students.
The college celebrated the opening of its new Molex Advanced Electronics Lab with a ribbon cutting ceremony.
North Central partnered up with Lisle-based electronic connectors company Molex to deliver a lab with 28 student workstations.
“Molex was kind enough to provide the funding for the core equipment that’ll be available at each work station in the lab, but they’re also supplementing it with in some cases, quite expensive pieces of equipment that will be stationed around the perimeter of the lab to give our students exposure to things that many students don’t get exposure to at the undergraduate level,” said North Central College President Troy D. Hammond.
Inside the Lab
Some of the things students are exposed to include electronic testing equipment, learning all about high speed signaling, power management and controls, and more.
“Our program is very heavily involved in robotics and automation. So the students have to understand the performance of motors, communication systems, and so forth. So think high-speed digital communication, high power, those types of things,” said North Central College engineering professor Frank Harwath.
Beyond the Lab
And while they’re busy working away in the lab, students will also get the chance to work side by side with Molex employees as they mentor the future engineers.
The Molex lab is North Central College’s latest project to help expand its engineering program.
