The ribbon has officially been cut for North Central College’s brand new Science Center.
“With this facility the sciences indeed will be an anchor of our brilliant future. Today we cut the ribbon on what I truly believe is the premiere multidisciplinary science center in the region,” said President of North Central College, Dr. Troy D. Hammond.
A large crowd full of elected officials, North Central faculty and students gathered at the new building to celebrate its grand opening.
“The city and the college have had a long history of working together in collaboration, and this building is such a success for the college,” said Mayor of the City of Naperville, Steve Chirico, “and whenever the college wins, our city wins.”
Congressman Bill Foster (D-11th District) added, “Receiving a quality education in STEM is vital to the advancement of our local community and our economy. And so it’s great to see that this Science Center will serve as a resource for teachers, for students and individuals from all over the surrounding community.”
The $60 million facility was completed in less than two years, resulting in 125,000 square feet of teaching and research labs, classrooms and almost 20 unique student gathering areas.
“While the old science center will always have a place in our hearts, I think I can speak for everybody when I say we’re excited to make this building our new home,” said North Central College junior, Kelsey LaMartina. “The new Science Center has special meaning because the students can enjoy the perks of a small college, while getting a world-class education in science, that’s not just something you can find anywhere.”
Nearly 2,000 students will be taking classes in the new building during this spring term, which began directly after the ribbon cutting.
But the work is not done yet; equipment is still being installed in the final labs, with plans for full classroom occupancy by the fall term.
“We can be and will be the source for the best scientific thinkers who are trained with a sound liberal arts education and well prepared to be both citizens and leaders over their lifetime. We have answered the call, through the generosity of this community, to truly shine,” added Dr. Hammond.
