As you’re starting to put up those holiday lights you’ll probably come across a few that no longer work but the Naperville Park District has just the place for them.
In partnership with Elgin Recycling, four park district locations have bins out to collect old, nonworking lights.
“Well we really are conscious of the environment at the park district and we lead in a lot of things we do to conserve our resources. So this is a way to give people an easy way to keep these lights and strands of lights out of the landfill. Because already we have a lot in this container and if you can imagine that filling up a landfill it’s very wasteful too,” said Sue Omanson, the community development manager for the park district.
Mini, rope, LED, C-7, and C-9 lights will all be accepted for recycling.
You can drop them off at the Fort Hill Activity Center, Alfred Rubin Riverwalk Community Center, Springbrook Golf Course, and Knoch Knolls Nature Center, now through February 1.
Since the Naperville Park District began the recycling program eight years ago, the largest amount of lights ever collected in one year was two tons.
