There’s one structure at the base of Rotary Hill that might “ring a bell” when you think of the turn of the 21st century.
With the arrival of the year 2000, construction was well underway for the Millennium Carillon, a gift to the city’s residents. Co-chairman of the Millennium Carillon Foundation Chuck Seidel was the visionary behind the 16-story, $1.5 structure, made possible through donations and grants.
Upon completion, local residents and city leaders held a dedication ceremony on the Fourth of July, the year 2000. Standing 160ft tall, the carillon reaches higher than the statue of liberty. Within it, lies Moser Tower, which houses 72 bells that can be played either manually or by a computer-controlled system of hammers. You’ll often hear those bells ring out to commemorate special occasions and during weekly carillonneurs recitals every Saturday at noon from April to December.
