The NPD will be bringing awareness to domestic and dating violence. That’s the theme of this month’s Safer Naper.
Every year the Naperville Police Department receives over 1,000 calls on domestic violence.
Of course there are many additional cases that go unreported, and the stigma around the subject is something the department is addressing this month.
“It can be very difficult because of the fact of the cycle of abuse. There’s a reason why it’s called ‘domestic’ or ‘dating’, it’s because typically it’s some sort of relationship where one person cares about another person,” said Jamie Horner, a social worker for the Naperville Police Department.
The police department will be hosting several events to educate the public with idea that the more discussion about domestic violence, the better.
“It’s really unfortunate we don’t talk about it more because, the more we talk about it the more we speak up about it, the more that people will reach out and ask for help and get the support services they need,” added Horner.
To that end the NPD is offering free women’s self defense classes on April 10 and 12, and is holding a Victims Services Information Fair at Wentz Hall, on April 11.
