Block 59 in Naperville has another colorful addition.

The center’s second large-scale mural is being added to the south side of Five Below, designed by Lake Zurich artist and graphic designer Alyssa Low.

Featuring icons of Naperville

Low was inspired by Naperville landmarks like Moser Tower and the Riverwalk.

Other symbols are a nod to the restaurants in Block 59.

“Just given the community here around Naperville, [there are] so many different restaurants, shops, and entertainment. So the subject matter in itself, there was a lot to choose from, and you know it’s not just the destination Block 59, but it’s also the city of Naperville as well,” Low said.

Low began designing the mural after she was commissioned for the piece last year.

Painting began on July 30, and Low was assisted by artists Sally Traxler-Lavengood and Andrea Jablonski.

“They’re folks that have painted a few murals for me already. So I’ve loved collaborating with them, and they’re just really great partners,” Low said.

Commissioned by Block 59 developers

Block 59 developers Brixmor Property Group put out a call for artists to complete two projects in the dining square, adding to the continued redevelopment of the space.

The first mural was painted on the east wall of the building that holds Cava, Crisp & Green and Velvet Taco. Sycamore artist Kailey Rorer completed the mural at the end of June.

Low was recommended for the project by a mutual friend of a Brixmor staff member.

This second one is adding its finishing touches.

“When it comes to creating a piece, it really is a collaboration between the partners from Block 59 and Brixmor. It really was a team effort to create this piece,” Low said.

“I think about how I can take these iconic forms and really kind of pare it down to be geometric, but then also give the viewer the sort of autonomy to come up with their own interpretation as well,” Low continued.

Bringing a fresh coat of creativity to Block 59.
