Six years and running strong, Special Survivor Games took over the gym of Peterson Elementary School this afternoon.
The event brings multi-needs students together for backyard-style obstacle courses and relay races.
With the help of their peers, the students run the relays, learning about teamwork and getting better at tasks that may be difficult for them.
“There’s not a lot of activities for our students with disabilities at the elementary level, so it’s really just a great opportunity for them to come in for a couple of hours after school,” said Kari Saunders, a special education teacher in District 204.
“I think it’s a really good time for everybody to come together and share these experiences because it’s important for them to be able to get involved with people in our community and be able to just have fun with their friends,” said Founder of Special Survivor Games, Marissa Kucharski.
Around 40 students came out to participate this year, and about 30 staff and faculty from District 204 schools volunteered as team leaders.
Elementary students from all over Naperville are encouraged to participate in Special Survivor Games every spring so the event can reach more students.
