A petition has sparked a change in the herbicide the Naperville Park District uses to kill weeds.
The group announced they would temporarily suspend the use of Roundup to treat weeds in local playgrounds.
The change comes after over 250 people signed an online petition requesting the park district to halt the use of the product in playgrounds and at public schools, claiming it contains potentially hazardous chemicals.
In response, the district said public health and safety are at the forefront of their mission, and they will look into alternative organic weed killers, though adding that Roundup had been used only sparingly and responsibly.
The district asks for the public’s understanding as they try new methods, as parks may see more weeds than usual.
