From the Hardwood to the Diamond

It’s hard ending a record breaking season as a senior… knowing that you reached the highest standard a program has seen and then your career ends… but lucky enough for Cole Gregorio, he went from the hardwood of the Waubonsie basketball gym to the diamond for the warrior baseball program as a double athlete.

“Well I think a lot of it is knowing what it takes to be successful in any sport and the relationship that the team has to have. And I think applying that to any sport whether it’s basketball, baseball, any other sport, it can make a team do great things,” Gregorio says.

Started From the Bottom

Gregorio has played basketball and baseball since he was really young, but ultimately picks the diamond as his favorite place to be, “I’ve always loved baseball and it just makes me really happy playing the sport and I really enjoy it, going outside and the relationship we have with the guys it’s just really fun. I love basketball too but baseball is just something that I’ve always loved. It’s been my passion my whole life.”

Lucky for him… he’s quite good at it too, in one of his most recent games, he had 7 RBIs on three hits… one of those hits being a grand slam. According to Coach Bryan Acevedos Cole’s attitude on the field helped him become a team captain for his senior season.

Life After High School

After his high school career is over, Gregorio plans to follow in his brother Luke’s footsteps and go to North Central College and play baseball for a program that has won 4 conference titles in a row.

Gregorio talks about NCC, “Well my brother goes to North Central and ever since he’s gone there he’s had nothing but great things to say about it and obviously that was a big factor in me going there and they have had a lot of success in the past.”

Going into a program that has reached the college World Series can be daunting but Gregorio wants to achieve his high school goals before looking forward to his collegiate ones.

“Obviously we just want to be successful. Maybe make a run at the DVC Championship. We have a really good group of guys and we are just excited for what this year holds,” Gregorio says.

Success and excitement is what is on his mind as he and the team take the field each game… but how can you blame him when he comes off such a big winter season and is hoping to reach that level once more in the spring.
