Naperville native Candace Parker inducted into Basketball Hall of Fame

Former Naperville Central High School star Candace Parker was officially inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame on Saturday night during a ceremony in Springfield, Massachusetts.

The two-time league MVP and three-time WNBA Champion was enshrined in the 2026 class alongside coaches Mark Few, Mike D’Antoni, and Doc Rivers, players Amar’e Stoudemire, Elena Delle Donne, and Chamique Holdsclaw, referee Joey Crawford, and the 1996 Women’s U.S. National Team.

Naperville seeks applicants for $2M in 2027 project grants

The city of Naperville will soon accept applications for more than $2 million in grants for 2027 community projects and services.

The money comes from four programs: the federal Community Development Block Grant and city-funded grants for Special Events & Community Arts, Social Services and Opioid Remediation.

‘Vacation’ no longer reason for excused absences in IPSD 204

Parents in Indian Prairie School District 204 will no longer be able to select “vacation” as a reason for their child’s absence, due to a set of attendance-related changes the district is implementing this year. 

The district is standardizing its coding for absence recording, adding new automated messages alerting parents when their child has missed five or nine days of school.

Nike Sports Complex basketball, tennis courts

Improvements to the Nike Sports Complex’s basketball and tennis courts will take place late this summer and into the fall. The Naperville Park Board on Thursday approved a contract capped at $251,536.55 for the pair of renovation projects.

J&R 1st in Asphalt Inc., the winning bidder, will oversee the projects, which include eight tennis courts and two basketball courts. Tasks include asphalt work, color coating, striping the courts, replacing goal and netting, and new landscaping.

The Naperville Park District received three bids from outside contractors for the work. Other base bid quotes ranged from $298,380 to $303,025.
