After more than a year of study and discussion, a plan has been chosen to improve the 95th Street/Book Road intersection.
Three options were presented to the public on September 20, 2018. “Alternative three”, the most comprehensive plan, was favored by 70% of the public and city staff.
“’Alternative three’, geometrically, it includes a northbound and a southbound through lane on Book Road through the intersection as well as right turn lanes on all approaches,” said Kelly Dunne, project manager for this intersection. “Adding all those lane configurations has the biggest capacity improvement so that traffic delay will be minimized with the intersection. It also provides the biggest safety benefit.”
The plan would add a right turn lane for all four directions of traffic, as well as additional northbound and southbound lanes on Book Road.
“It’s messy while it’s happening, but when it gets done, then it’s nice to keep things flowing through,” said Linda Strain, a resident near the intersection.
Besides providing the most traffic relief at the congested 95th Street/Book Road intersection, “alternative three” is also the safest option. This makes it a stronger candidate for federal funding through the highway safety improvement program.
The intersection is currently experiencing about 20 crashes per year – three times more than most similar intersections in Illinois.
Construction is expected to start in 2021 and finish that same year.
