The Naperville Police Department is investigating a series of phone calls made Tuesday evening, threatening violence to multiple schools in Naperville School District 203.
Superintendent informs the school community
Superintendent Dan Bridges emailed the school community, informing everyone of voicemail messages left for the main office, including threats of bombs and weapons. “[They] are part of a concerning regional trend involving identical recordings sent to various school districts over the last several days,” he said in his email.
The NPD didn’t comment any further on the nature of these threats but did confirm that “several schools in our jurisdiction received similar voicemails with threats of planted explosives and the use of firearms.”
Threats are trending
The police department “has found no evidence to support the threats being credible,” Commander Rick Krakow told NCTV17 in an email. “Other local jurisdictions have received similar threats recently, but the trend appears to go well beyond the Chicagoland area.”
“It is profoundly disappointing that individuals would choose to target educational institutions with the intent to create fear and disrupt the learning environment,” stated Bridges. “These actions waste critical emergency resources, cause unnecessary anxiety for our families, and disrespect the sanctuary of our schools.”
These phone calls come as the students are off on Spring Break and just several days after Naperville North High School was put on a soft lockdown due to a reported shooting threat. Bridges said that the school district takes each threat seriously and will continue to partner with authorities to hold those responsible for the phone calls accountable.
